In April, WWE announced that following the downright negative response to their last video game, WWE 2K20, this year would see the release of an entirely new game franchise, WWE 2K Battlegrounds.
Now, in a further update, full details have been released as well as artwork and an updated trailer. Let’s work through all that you need to know.
The game will release across all major consoles on September 18th 2020.
What’s The Roster Like?
The roster upon launch will feature 70 current superstars and legends with plenty more available as DLC in due course. The announced roster is:
- Roman Reigns
- Drew McIntyre
- John Cena
- Becky Lynch
- Daniel Bryan
- Kofi Kingston
- Randy Orton
- Andre the Giant
- Shawn Michaels
- Sgt. Slaughter
- Charlotte Flair
- Sasha Banks
- Bray Wyatt “The Fiend”
- Stone Cold Steve Austin
- The Rock
- Ronda Rousey
- Braun Strowman
- The Big Show
- Samoa Joe
Crucially, all the wrestlers that are added post-release will be available at no extra cost.
Clearly a bombastic, cartoony game calls for a similar commentary style. As such, Mauro Ranello and Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler seem the perfect team.
Modes & Gameplay
The following game modes will be available to test your mettle:
- Exhibition: Take part in Exhibition matches at home or on-the-go, anytime and anywhere, in local and online multiplayer action for up to four players;
- Campaign: Join the adventures of seven new WWE hopefuls – created exclusively for WWE 2K Battlegrounds – in Campaign mode and compete for the chance to earn a WWE contract. Along the way, you’ll unlock new arenas, inspired by locations such as the Everglades, a military-style Bootcamp, Mexico, New York and Scotland, while receiving guidance from legendary personalities including “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Paul Heyman
- King of the Battleground: Take on all comers in the King of the Battleground, an online, last-man-standing mode where four players start in the ring while four more wait outside to enter, challenging you to run the gauntlet and defeat them all;
- Online: Test your toughness in online tournaments and Exhibition matches.
There will be eight different environments in the game including a cartoony version of WrestleMania, a swamp and what looks like a wild west setting
Users are promised the ability to customise both wrestlers and environments. 2K games are known for their incredible creator and customiser suites so this should be a lot of fun.
Certainly this will not be a simulation. The press release suggested it would be an easy game to pick up and play and tough to master. Expect a mix of traditional wrestling moves and outlandish specials. Think an updated version of WrestleMania: The Arcade Game and you’re probably close.
How Will It Be Available?
The game will be available for PS4, X-Box One, Nintendo Switch and Stadia.
The Standard Edition will retail for $39.99. Customers who pre-order the SE will get Edge at launch. The Digital Deluxe Edition will retail for $49.99, and it will include Edge, Ronda Rousey, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and The Rock, in addition to 1100 bonus Golden Bucks, in-game currency that can be used to unlock Superstars, as well as cosmetic items.
When the game is released in the UK, expect similar pricing to the US levels.
