WWE held SummerSlam last night live from The ThunderDome (Well, the Amway Center in Orlando anyway).
Overall, the show was a triumph. For the first time since February, the show felt like a true PPV event, the atmosphere and presentation benefiting exponentially from the move away from the Performance Center.
The show was promoted with the tagline ‘You’ll Never See It Coming’, which all longtime wrestling fans will have clocked meant a surprise was coming – and we got one to close the PPV.
The surprise came in the aftermath of The Fiend defeating Braun Strowman to win the Universal Championship in a lacklustre Falls Count Anywhere bout. As Bray Wyatt’s demonic alter-ego showed off his new belt, a familiar figure clad in black rushed the ring. Roman Reigns had returned!
The Big Dog took a leave of absence from WWE starting just before WrestleMania due to infection fears stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. Clearly the move to the new production environment has eased these fears and WWE has been given a huge shot in the arm in terms of star power.
It was an exciting end to a great PPV and we expect to see more from Reigns this coming Friday on SmackDown
