Roman Reigns On Mental Health, Family, And The Tribal Chief Character

A few nights before WrestleMania, Reigns talks candidly about what kept him going through his time away from the ring

Ahead of this WrestleMania 37 this weekend, Roman Reigns has been speaking to Jason Duaine Hahn at People about keeping himself focused during his time off during the COVID-19 pandemic. To help himself concentrate on his mental health, the Universal Champion made sure that he was focusing on his physical health and keeping a decent routine in his life.

“I definitely advise that to anyone who is on that day-to-day discipline struggle, where it’s like man, even if you can’t motivate yourself, create a space to where you just do it because you know you have to do it,” Reigns says. “That’s discipline. You just do it because you’ve already convinced yourself that it needs to be done. It’s not about being motivated. There are different tools to motivate yourself in different ways. But build a way of thinking, a mental toughness to where you just do it because you know it’s going to benefit your life.”

Reigns was supposed to face Goldberg at last WrestleMania last year but decided that when the pandemic happened, he needed to take the time off.

“Due to having the availability and the lack of travel, I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to just invest so much more time in my relationship with my wife and my family,” says Reigns, who has been married to his wife, Galina Becker, since 2014. “It’s going to make you a better individual if your team is untouchable and is extremely strong.”

Making his surprise return at SummerSlam attacking both the Fiend and Braun Strowman, he then went on to beat both in a Triple Threat match at Payback to win the Universal title for the second time. On his return he debuted the ‘Tribal Chief’ character, aligned himself with Paul Heyman and then also Jey Uso. Reigns is now arguable the top heel across the entire WWE roster and has been well received by fans all over the world.

“It feels good,” Reigns says of his new persona. “There’s a lot of truth to what we put into the Tribal Chief character, the burden of the crown, of being the face of the company. I think everybody would like to be Superman, but to be able to have some of those Superman qualities, then also display the emotions, the mentality that comes into it, and the way it can affect a man. People connect to that. People understand the struggle, people understand these different battles, these emotional battles that my character kind of displays on a weekly basis,” he continues. “I think it allows for a different connection, and that’s why it’s been received so well.”

Reigns has his eye on the upcoming match at WrestleMania against Daniel Bryan and Royal Rumble winner Edge, but he’s also looking into the future and what that will bring for him in his career and for his family.

“I want to grind it out for the next 15 years, I want to maximize my potential for the next 15 years. This is who I am, as a performer, as a talent, but I also am a father, I’m a husband. Those are my goals, to better myself mentally and physically, and also strengthen all of my relationships with my loved ones.”
