If a report on Wrestlingnews.co is to be believed, Vince McMahon smells money. And he smells that money in the form of one Matt Riddle.
Riddle made his SmackDown in-ring debut last month in a stellar match with AJ Styles and it is quite clear that he is being treated as an upper-echelon guy already.
Reports suggest that he is already given significantly more creative input into his promos and character than most.
McMahon has long made it clear that he admires and relates to people with the same rebel mentality he sees in himself. The same rebel mentality that was perhaps most notably embodied in WWE Hall Of Famer, Shawn Michaels. Does McMahon see any of The Heartbreak Kid in Riddle? It wouldn’t be a stretch to make that assumption.
The anonymous source said:
“Vince likes guys like Shawn who have that rebel mentality and he sees some of Shawn in Matt. Matt can rub some people the wrong way but he’s a good guy and he will do great when Vince calls him up. I think he’s a future world champion. Vince will try to tweak him but his personality will get him far.”
Riddle is a polarising figure both in front of and behind the curtain and certainly a man who beats to his own drum. Does that abrasive personality rub some up the wrong way? Almost certainly. But it also allows to fully embody a unique character with a specific and well defined aura. If Vince McMahon truly does feel a bond between the pair, Riddle has all the tools to go far. Who knows, maybe those matches against Lesnar and Goldberg will be in the former UFC star’s future after all.
