Paige: Women’s Tag Titles Have Been “Thrown Under The Rug”

The anti-Diva telling it how it is…

WWE’s weekly Backstage show on FOX has been an opportunity for members of their roster (and of course, CM Punk) to let loose on certain aspects of their employers’ product, to a degree.

This week that trend continued as former NXT and WWE women’s title-holder Paige told us how she really felt about the on-screen portrayal of the relatively-new women’s tag team titles.

During the show, she explained:

“I feel like the tag team championship haven’t been utilize to their full potential, considering everyone that’s had them. I feel like they’re not being defended. I don’t think they’ve been used right, they’ve kind of been thrown under the rug.

“They’re not being taken very seriously and I just feel like at some point they have to be taken seriously because this is such a big moment for the women’s division to have these tag team titles — instead of just having one championship.

“Now we have a tag team division and we could utilize so many of the tag teams we have, even down in NXT or up in RAW and SmackDown. Bayley and Sasha — they’re good, they’re solid, we all love them, but let’s try and build some other people.”

Fellow guest this week, Ember Moon, shared similar thoughts. She told the panel that the decision for Sasha Banks and Bayley to regain the belts “wasn’t the right decision”.

She felt the Bayley/Sasha storyline didn’t need the tag straps, which could be used to further another women’s program at the same time.

WWE does indeed have history for putting all of their championship eggs in one storyline basket for seemingly no additional gain and the risk of several losses in wrestler value elsewhere.

Just off the top of this writer’s mind, the tag team title combinations of The Rock and The Undertaker, John Cena and Shawn Michaels and John Cena and David Otunga leap forward as examples of needless title transfers for storylines that already had everything they needed.
