Earlier in the week we joked that in a week where AJ Styles would be facing Daniel Bryan, Edge vs Orton might have trouble being the greatest wrestling match of the week, never mind all time.
Well after last night’s match, with only a smidge of hyperbole, it’s fair to say that if the two WWE veterans somehow do manage to have the best match of the week then they’re in with a shout of living up to Backlash’s moniker…
In what was an incredibly good 38 minute match, AJ Styles defeated Daniel Bryan in the tournament final to become the new Intercontinental Champion.
Not many will argue that this is comfortably the best match across any wrestling company in this empty arena era. It will be classed by many as of the best WWE TV matches of the last decade and would surely be in with a shout of the best TV match in company history if it was played out in front of a crowd.
Strangely, the match was not in the main event slot of the programme but it did span the majority of the show and Styles took home the win with the Phenomenal Forearm.
The tournament itself has been a mixed bag. With the shenanigans surrounding Jeff Hardy’s exit in the second round along with Elias’s injury, the road to the final has been a little underwhelming.
It’s fair to say however, this match made the whole thing more than worthwhile and lived up to the long legacy of the IC title that was highlighted by a wonderful pre-match video.
