Last night’s episode of AEW Dynamite was billed as ‘Tag Team Appreciation Night’, one of the conditions of FTR signing contracts with the company (in storyline terms, of course)
The showpiece angle of the night saw two legendary tag teams come together in the ring for the first time in decades. The Brain Busters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) met the Rock And Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) to talk all things tag teams. They were joined in the ring by The Young Bucks and FTR.
It didn’t take long for temperatures to fray and it looked like Blanchard’s charge Shawn Spears was about to attack Anderson.
Eventually, FTR were left alone with Morton and Gibson in the ring and it transpired that the injury Dax Harwood has been playing up this week was false and he and Cash Wheeler attacked Gibson before taking out Morton with a huge spike piledriver.
This brought the Bucks back out along with Kenny Omega and Hangman Page to make the save but the damage was done and FTR had truly made their mark on the AEW tag team division.
It appears the whole night was set up as a ploy by FTR to send a message to tag teams past and present about the danger they pose.
The situation will surely lead to a blockbuster tag team title match at All Out on September 5th. Could we see a tag team triple threat match? Or will FTR get their inevitable shot in a two on two match?
Either way, this was another memorable angle and fantastic set up from AEW.
