Yesterday a new IWGP World Heavyweight Champion was crowned in the form of Will Ospreay.
‘The Aerial Assassin’ defeated Kota Ibushi to become the second holder of the new unified belt.
This didn’t tell the whole story, as after the match both Shingo and Kazuchika Okada came to the ring to stake a claim for a shot at the belt.
Whilst Okada and Ospreay are long-time friends turned rivals, with Okada last picking up a victory over Ospreay at Wrestle Kingdom 15, Shingo was the main who eliminated ‘The Rainmaker’ from this year’s New Japan Cup in the first round.
After his victory Ospreay declared it would be Shingo first, then Okada.
NJPW have today confirmed that Okada will get his shot at the title on 29th May at the Tokyo Dome.
He will seemingly meet the winner of a match between Ospreay and Shingo, although no date for that match has been set.
