It was announced on this week’s edition of NXT that the future of Finn Balor’s NXT Title reign is under significant threat.
Last week we found out that Balor had suffered a double fracture of the jaw in his first title defense against Kyle O’Reilly at the recent NXT TakeOver 31.
At first it was thought to be a simple case of letting the injury heal but on this week’s edition of NXT it was announced that Balor actually underwent surgery to fix the injury that will require an undetermined spell on the sidelines. In storyline terms it was said that NXT General Manager William Regal has elected to “give it a few weeks” to see how the injury heals before making a decision.
You have to imagine that WWE would be hugely reluctant to strip Balor of the title. He only won the belt after it was vacated due to an injury to former champion Karrion Kross at the previous TakeOver event in his title winning bout. If the new champion were to also suffer a reign-ending injury in his first defense, this would leave the main event scene in tatters.
The only thing is to wait for further news. But the nature of the surgery means an end to Balor’s reign on medical grounds would be considered likely in the coming weeks.
