Last night’s NXT played host to a barnstorming new match type, the Gauntlet Eliminator. As announced by NXT General Manager William Regal the week prior, the winner of the match would go on to face NXT Champion Finn Balor at TakeOver on October 4th.

The surprising winner was multi-time NXT Tag Team Champion Kyle O’Reilly!

The participants in the match were Bronson Reed, Cameron Grimes, KUSHIDA, Kyle O’Reilly and Timothy Thatcher. The rules saw two men start in the ring before being joined by a new participant every four minutes. Elimination could occur at any time via pinfall or submission.

KUSHIDA and O’Reilly were the first two participants and were soon joined by Reed, Thatcher and Grimes in that order. KUSHIDA was the first eliminated after interference from Velveteen Dream and he was followed by Reed and Thatcher, leaving Grimes and O’Reilly as the last two men.

The ultimate winner was Kyle O’Reilly via tapout. The Undisputed Era memeber will now go on to face Balor in his first TakeOver singles match and first NXT Championship opportunity.

NXT TakeOver will take place on October 4th on the WWE Network. The card so far sees three matches set:

  • NXT Championship: Finn Balor vs. Kyle O’Reilly
  • NXT Women’s Championship: Io Sharai vs. Candice LeRae
  • North American Championship: Damian Priest vs. Johnny Gargano
