Last week’s Four-Way Ironman match to determine a new NXT Champion ended in a tie between two competitors, Adam Cole and Finn Balor, resulting in a match between the two that took place this week on NXT.
WWE announced ahead of time that the match would open their second ‘Super Tuesday’ show and the 23 minute encounter ended with Balor becoming the NXT Champion for the second time.
Fans had sky high expectations for the match that in truth was good but not great. The finish came when Balor hit a 1916 off the top rope to Cole.
The match was clearly wrestled with an air of mutual respect, furthering Cole’s recent transition to a babyface role. This was cemented later in the show when the leader of the Undisputed Era admitted his opponent was the better man on the night and even offered the new champion the ‘Too Sweet’ hand gesture as a mark of respect.
The win makes Balor the NXT Champion for the first time since 2016. Over a four year gap between reigns. The title was vacated by Karrion Kross who suffered a serious shoulder injury during his title winning bout with Keith Lee at NXT Takeover XXX.
