WWE fans have become accustomed to the sight of Dominik Mysterio on TV in recent months and at SummerSlam this coming Sunday, he will make his in-ring debut when he faces Seth Rollins.
There has been some debate about how the son of wrestling legend Rey Mysterio will be presented in the match. An interview with ESPN has cleared up some of that debate and also set out intriguing plans for his future character.
In the article it is confirmed that Dominik will wrestle under his own name on Sunday but in the near future, he may take on the name ‘Prince Mysterio’
His father Rey explains:
“We actually talked about it. He definitely has to continue with the Mysterio dynasty. It’s in his genes. I think we’re going to incorporate that eventually and create a good story so the fans can understand the rich history behind lucha libre and the masks.”
The name fits the family legacy well. The term ‘Rey’ means King in Spanish and the mask is something that was worn not just by Dominik’s father but by his great uncle, the original Rey Mysterio.
In fact, until he joined WWE, Rey used to wrestled as Rey Mysterio Jr. to differentiate himself and pay homage to his uncle who used the Rey Mysterio name before him.
Rumour suggests that the mask is already made so it might not be long before we see Dominik’s change of persona.
He had the following to say about the idea:
“I’ve always wanted to wear a mask mainly because of tradition. It’s important to keep that tradition going. Now with my face being out there, I think it would just have to be introduced a little bit differently so people understand. I definitely want to wear one, but it has to be introduced properly.”
Dominik’s match against Rollins is one of the most intriguing at the event. For someone to make their professional wrestling debut at SummerSlam, one of WWE’s Major PPVs, the company must have a certain level of confidence in him. That he is in with one of WWE’s best workers and wrestling’s greatest heels bodes well.
