Drew McIntyre’s title reign has been wonderfully fresh so far.
Even without fans in the arena to visually endorse him, McIntyre has carried himself like an established and confident champion since be beat Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36.
He has been helped in this regard by the lack of a long term personal feud to take focus away from his status as champion.
His character has been defined by that championship since April and that status has been bolstered by a revolving set of challengers that McIntyre has dispatched comfortably in the manner of an old school champion.
Last night on Raw, the latest of this rogues gallery was confirmed as Dolph Ziggler returned to Raw to confront his former tag team partner.
It was announced (By Dolph) that he and his current partner, the currently absent Bobby Roode have been traded to Raw as the makeweight in AJ Styles’ previous move to SmackDown.
In the opening segment of Raw, Ziggler confronted the champion to suggest that the Scot owes him a title shot for (storyline wise), bringing him back to WWE and putting him on the path to greatness.
Whilst McIntyre didn’t entirely agree with Ziggler’s assessment of who owes what to who, he did agree to his request for a championship bout and that has now been confirmed to be taking place at WWE Extreme Rules on Sunday July 19th. You can watch this event live on the WWE Network.
The card as currently announced is as below:
WWE Championship Match: Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler
Raw Women’s Championship Match: Asuka vs. Sasha Banks
