When the bracket for the Intercontinental Championship tournament was released last week, one name stood out.
Amongst a field of SmackDown Live stars, Raw roster member AJ Styles was announced to be facing old rival Shinsuke Nakamura in the first round.
Without explanation from WWE, the assumption from viewers was that this would be part of the newly announced ‘Brand To Brand Invitational’ scheme whereby a superstar could appear on another brand by ‘invitation’ but only up to four times per year (yeah, right…)
However it was announced ahead of the tournament match that Styles had in fact been permanently traded to SmackDown with the identity of the star or stars going the other way to be revealed in due course.
Styles went on to defeat Ol’ Nakkers in the match and will now face Elias in the semi-finals next week. The winner of that match will face either Daniel Bryan or Jeff Hardy in the final.
