On This Day In Wrestling History… September 30th

Take a look back at some of the significant events in wrestling history on September 30th including Progress Wrestling’s biggest ever event.

1960 – One of the most beloved Japanese wrestlers ever, Shohei ‘Giant’ Baba made his professional wrestling debut for the Japanese Wrestling Association. Baba would beat Yonetaro Tanaka in his match while another debuting wrestler, Antonio Inoki lost to Kintaro Oki.

1972 – WWWF presented ‘Showdown at Shea’ from Shea Stadium in Flushing, New York. The main event saw a lengthy match between Pedro Morales and Bruno Sammartino which ended in a draw after 65 minutes due to curfew regulations.

1990 – To mark the 30 year anniversary of Giant Baba’s wrestling debut All Japan Pro Wrestling celebrates with a show in Korakuen Hall in Tokyo. The main event saw Baba and Abdullah the Butcher lose to the team of Andre the Giant & Stan Hansen. On the same day, New Japan Pro Wrestling celebrates Antonio Inoki’s 30-year career in Yokohama, Japan. Inoki faired better than Baba as he teamed with Tiger Jeet Singh to defeat Animal Hamaguchi and Big Van Vader.

2002 – Raw was held in Houston, Texas. The main event saw Chris Jericho defend his Intercontinental Championship belt against one half of the Tag Team champions, Kane. After escaping the Walls of Jericho by forcing a rope break, Kane delivered a huge chokeslam to Jericho and pinned him to become the Intercontinental Champion, his second championship belt in a week.

2016 – At ROH All Star Extravaganca VIII, The Young Bucks won the ROH Tag Team Titles in a spectacular ladder match against The Motor City Machine Guns and defending champions Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian.

2018 – Progress Wrestling held their biggest ever event, Chapter 76: Hello Wembley! The crowd of 4,750 saw WALTER defend the Progress Championship in the main event against Tyler Bate. The event also saw the retirement of British wrestling legend Doug Williams as he lost the Progress Atlas Title to Trent Seven.

2019 – The NWA tape the first batch of episodes for their new series, ‘NWA Powerrr’. In the featured match, Nick Aldis defends the NWA Championship against former champion Tim Storm.
