Drew McIntyre may already have his hands full when it comes to title challengers, ahead of the battle with Randy Orton at SummerSlam next month, however that hasn’t stopped the Scotsman from issuing a challenge of his own to a future contender to his WWE crown.
Responding to a Twitter Q&A prior to Monday Night Raw this past week, McIntyre was asked who he thought was the most underrated performer on WWE’s roster. To quote the WWE Champion, McIntyre said “I assume the standard answer by now is @WWECesaro”.
A popular answer indeed, but Drew added fuel to the fire in his answer by finishing his tweet with ‘I want that match’.
A quick Google search will tell you that Drew McIntyre and Cesaro have never had a one-on-one match in WWE, and the first-ever British WWE champion didn’t have to wait long for a response from one half of the current SmackDown Tag Team Champions. Speaking exclusively to WWE Kids Editor and Hooked On’s own Ash Rose, the Swiss admitted he would relish the chance of stepping in the ring with the current face of Monday Night Raw.
“I would love to have a match with Drew, you don’t know how much I would love to!” Cesaro said whilst clutching his newly won SmackDown Tag Team Championship belt.
We’ve never had a match, although we did work as team, that may have been the last match of The Bar – so maybe not great mojo for me! Drew though has an incredible story, coming from Europe and working his way to WWE and then getting released, working on the indies and getting back to WWE and then beating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania – incredible. I would love to be in the ring with him because he’s very physical, super athletic and I would love to challenge him for that WWE Title given the chance.”
Cesaro’s victory at The Horror Show at Extreme Rules is his seventh Tag Team Title reign, reigns that have included such memorable team-mates such as Sheamus, Tyson Kidd and most recently Shinsuke Nakamura – and that’s without mentioning his run with Jack Swagger in The Real Americans.
So, does it come naturally to the Swiss Superman to be a ‘tag team specialist’ despite the constant clamour from fans for him to have a world title run?
“I would like to look at myself as a specialist, and whatever the task is I excel at, whether that be singles or tag team wrestling. Obviously, I’ve had a lot of success as a tag team and I’ve been lucky enough to have some extremely talented tag team partners, so I look at myself as the special seasoning that hopefully makes everything a little bit better.”
Whether that seasoning would be enough to finally earn him a run a top title remains to be seen, but a match with Drew McIntyre is surely something fans would be very keen on seeing in the future.
Catch Cesaro on SmackDown airing live on Friday nights on BT Sport in the UK.
