Remembering Six Awesome Little Things About Owen Hart

Our editor fondly remembers some of the easily-forgotten things Owen Hart did so well.

Today is May 23rd, which is a sobering one on the professional wrestling calendar.

It’s the 21st anniversary of the night Owen Hart tragically fell to his death during Over The Edge 1999.

There has already been a lot this week about Owen, most of it very heavy and heart-wrenching thanks to VICE’s Dark Side of the Ring series and the latest in the row between WWE and Owen’s widow Martha.

But today, we just wanted to remember some of the easily-forgotten things that made Owen so great.

First and foremost, his spinning heel/wheel kick was a thing of beauty. Arguably the very best to do it

Owen’s matches with brother Bret at Wrestlemania and Summerslam in 1994 were amazing. But remember when he and Sean Waltman tore the house down in less than four minutes at King of the Ring that year?

High Energy didn’t last long – but my word, were they fun while they were around!

After the Montreal Screwjob, for the briefest of times Owen portrayed the furious brother of the ‘screwed’ Bret with zero Fs given and nothing to lose. And it was glorious.

Speaking of the Hart family, Owen’s performance when heel-turned Bret reunited the Foundation after WM13 was phenomenal!

But all of that pales in comparison to Owen stealing a Slammy Award in 1997 and having every announcer refer to him as “the Slammy Award-winning Owen Hart”:
