On This Day in Wrestling…November 24th

On this day in wrestling history, a team of All Americans strode into WWE Survivor Series to face off with a squad of Foreign Fanatics.

1983 – The first annual Starrcade was promoted by the NWA in Greensboro, North Carolina. In the main event Ric Flair regained the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Harley Race in a Steel Cage match.  In the lead up to the title match Flair had offered a bounty to put Race out of professional wrestling.  This storyline was recycled twenty years later in the WWE on Raw with Triple H and Goldberg.

1987 – Honky Tonk Man retained the Intercontinental Title by countout against Randy Savage at a WWF house show in Madison Square Garden, New York City.

1988 – The second annual WWF Survivor Series once again came from Richfield, Ohio.  In the main event The Mega Powers (Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage) co-captained a team of Koko B. Ware, Hercules and Hillbilly Jim, and were victorious against opposition from The Twin Towers (Big Boss & Akeem) Ted Dibiase, Haku and The Red Rooster.

1990 – The Texas Tornado (Kerry Von Erich) retained the Intercontinental Title against Mr Perfect, and Hulk Hogan lost a one-on-one match against Earthquake by countout at a WWF house show at Madison Square Garden.

1993 – The historical Boston Garden hosted the WWF Survivor Series which sold-out in under an hour when tickets were released in early October. In addition to the four traditional tag-team elimination matches the Smoky Mountain Wrestling Tag Team Titles were contested when The Heavenly Bodies defeated The Rock n Roll Express to capture the titles.  In the main event elimination match, Lex Luger and his team of ‘All Americans’ (The Undertaker and The Steiner Brothers) defeated The Foreign Fanatics (Ludvig Borga, Crush and Quebecer Jacques) captained by the WWF Champion Yokozuna. Also on the card The Hart Family (Bret, Owen, Keith and Bruce) defeated Shawn Michaels (a replacement for Jerry “The King” Lawler”) and his Knights.  This match is notable for Bobby “The Brain” Heenan’s final WWF pay-per-view appearance for eight years.

1996 – The second annual WCW World War 3 pay-per-view came from Norfolk, Virginia.  For the first time the winner of the battle royale would receive a future shot at the WCW Championship.  The match was won by The Giant (Paul Wight). Also on the card The Outsiders (Scott Hall & Kevin Nash) retained the WCW Tag Team titles in a triple-threat match against The Faces of Fear and The Nasty Boys.

1997 – On WWF Raw from Fayettevile in North Carolina The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg & Billy Gunn) upset The Legion of Doom to win the WWF Tag Team titles. Also Goldust revealed Luna Vachon as his new love interest and DX promised to deliver Bret Hart to discuss the now infamous Montreal Screwjob. They ended up revealing a short person impersonating The Hitman.

1997 – On WCW Monday Nitro from Saginaw, Michigan Hollywood Hulk Hogan offered an open challenge for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship which was accepted by The Giant who won the main event match by disqualification. Also Randy Savage defeated Disco Inferno, Booker T pinned Meng, and Buff Bagwell defeated Chris Jericho.

2003 – On WWE Raw from Salt Lake City, Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels defeated Ric Flair and Batista in the tag team main event and Scott Steiner and Test were victorious over Rob Van Damn in a Handicap Singapore Cane match. Mark Henry beat Booker T in a “Salt Lake City Streetfight”, Trish Stratus won the Bra and Panties match against Jackie Gayda, and Victoria defeated Lita in the opening Steel Cage match.

2008 – Candice Michelle, Melina and Mickie James were victorious over Beth Phoenix, Jillian Hall and Katie Lea Burchill in the six person main event on WWE Raw from Providence in Rhode Island.  Also CM Punk defeated Snitsky, Chris Jericho won against Batista and Randy Orton in a triple threat match, and Rey Mysterio and Shawn Michaels were victorious over John Morrison and The Miz.

2008 – The TV taping of TNA Impact’s Thanksgiving Edition took place for The Turkey Bowl which consisted of three qualifying matches where Rhino defeated Hernandez & Sonjay Dutt, Alex Shelley won against Consequences Creed & Cute Kip, and Sheik Abdul Bashir was victorious over Jimmy Rave & Matt Morgan.  The tournament final was won by Rhino.

2009 – At the WWE Smackdown Taping in Bridgeport in Connecticut The Undertaker defeated Chris Jericho by disqualification, Batista beat Kane by count out to become the number one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship. And John Morrison retained the Intercontinental Title against Vickie Guerrero’s boyfriend Eric Escobar.

2011 – At the SMASH (Japan) Show 23 in Tokyo Dave “Fit” Finlay won the SMASH Title from Starbuck in the main event.

2013 – The WWE Survivor Series came from Boston, Mass where Randy Orton retained the WWE Championship in the main event against The Big Show, and John Cena defeated Alberto Del Rio to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. Also CM Punk and Daniel Bryan defeated Luke Harper and Eric Rowan from The Wyatt Family.

2013 – PROGRESS – Chapter Ten: Glory Follows Virtue As If It Were Its Shadow came from The Garage in Islington where the PROGRESS title changed hands twice. First, Mark Andrews defeated Rampage Brown, and then Jimmy Havoc and The Riots attacked Andrews after his match.  Havoc had a contract which stated he could have match of his choosing.  On this occasion Havoc chose a PROGRESS Title match, and defeated Andrews to win the Championship.

2014 – On WWE Raw from Indianapolis, Indiana, Dolph Ziggler & John Cena defeated Jamie Noble, Joey Mercury & Seth Rollins in the main event, and Dean Ambrose picked up a disqualification win over Intercontinental Champion Jeff Hardy.  Also Brie Bella pinned AJ Lee, and The Miz & Damien Mizdow retained the WWE Tag Team Championship against Goldust & Stardust.

2015 – At the WWE Smackdown taping from Indianapolis, Indiana, Dean Ambrose won the Triple Threat main event against Dolph Ziggler and Tyler Breeze. Also Paige defeated Becky Lynch by submission and The Dudleys picked up a win by disqualification over Wyatt Family members Braun Strowman & Erick Rowan.

2016 – At IWA-MS Bloofeast in Clarksville in Indiana Tracy Smothers retained the IWA:MS Heavyweight Title against Chris Hero, and Derek Neal, Larry D & Mitch Ryder were victorious over JC Rotten, John Wayne Murdoch & Nick Depp in the “Dog Collar” 6-Man Tag Team main event.

2019 – The NXT roster were part of the inter-promotional brand battles at the WWE Survivor Series in Chicago featuring the likes of Bianca Bel Air, Rhea Ripley, Matt Riddle, Tommaso Ciampa, Keith Lee. They were involved in the traditional tag team elimination matches, as well as singles and triple threat matches.  The NXT Championship was defended successfully by Adam Cole against Pete Dunne, Roderick Strong was victorious in a Triple-Threat match involving AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura.  Also The Fiend retained the Universal Championship against Daniel Bryan and Brock Lesnar was victorious over Rey Mysterio in a No Disqualification match for the WWE Championship.

2019 – PROGRESS – Chapter 98: May I Play Devil’s Advocate For A Minute? came from the Electric Ballroom in London where Edie Dennis & Mark Andrews defeated Connor Mills & The OJMO, Travis Banks defeated TK Cooper, and Jordan Devlin & Scott Davis retained the PROGRSS Tag Team Titles against Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan in the main event.

2019 – Michael Oku was victorious over PAC, Robbie Eagles and El Phantasmo in a Four-Way Elimination match to win the RevPro British J Cup at York Hall in London.
