On This Day In Wrestling…October 7th

On this day in wrestling history…October 7th 2015 saw arguably the greatest match in the history of North American women’s wrestling at NXT TakeOver: Respect.

1988 – Rockin’ Robin defeated Sensational Sherri for the WWF Women’s Championship. She reigned as champion until the title was deactivated in 1990.

1997 – On an episode of Raw Is War, The Legion Of Doom defeated The Godwinns to win the WWF Tag Team Championships. This was the last title Hawk and Animal would as a team in a major company.

2001 – ‘Gentleman’ Chris Adams was shot and killed at his home in Waxahachie, Texas following an alcohol fuelled argument. The Rugby, England born wrestler was 46 years old.

2007 – WWE presented ‘No Mercy’ on PPV from the AllState Arena in Chicago. The event was notable for containing a record three WWE Championship matches. The event began with Randy Orton being awarded the title after John Cena’s pectoral injury prior to the event. Orton was then immediately defeated for the title by Triple H. The Game subsequently defended the title against Umaga before losing it back to Orton in a Last Man Standing match, all in the same night.

2015 – WWE presented NXT TakeOver: Respect From Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. In the main event, Bayley successfully defended her title against Sasha Banks in a 30-minute Iron Woman match that many consider to be the best women’s match under the WWE banner in history. Elsewhere on the event, Finn Balor and Samoa Joe were declared the winners of the first ever Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament with a victory over Rhyno and Baron Corbin in the final.
