On This Day In Wrestling History…November 1st

On this day in wrestling history, TNA Wrestling taped one of the most unusual events in wrestling history in what would now be called a ‘cinematic’ style.

Matt Hardy & Hurricane Helms

1990 – Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger defeated Chris Benoit (Under his masked Pegasus Kid gimmick he used in Japan at that time) to win his third IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

1997 – Following the spiral of events that led to his WWF departure, Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart officially signed his WCW contract. The contract was worth $2.5 million per year and was supposedly to be kept confidential until after the Survivor Series PPV on November 9th. As we all know, the news was leaked in the days leading up to that PPV and led to the infamous ‘Montreal Screwjob’.

1998 – ECW November To Remember took place at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana. One title changed hands on the night when Balls Mahoney and Masato Tanaka defeated Buh Buh Ray and D-Von Dudley to win the ECW Tag Team Titles. In the main event, Rob Van Dam, Sabu and Taz beat The Triple Threat (Bam Bam Bigelow, Chris Candido and Shane Douglas)

1998 – WWE taped the debut of ‘Super Astros’, their Lucha Libre focused show made for the Hispanic market. In the main event, El Hijo Del Santo defeated Super Loco.

In the first of the featured bouts, Ric Flair successfully defended his Intercontinental Championship against Triple H in a fantastic old school style cage match. Fans voted for the cage stipulation with the other options being a regular match or submission match. In the main event, John Cena won a triple threat match for the WWE Championship against Kurt Angle and the winner of the fan’s vote, Shawn Michaels. The two other choices for the main event, Big Show and Kane, combined to defeat Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch for the World Tag Team Championship.

2012 – Brad Armstrong was found dead in his home in Georgia home at the age of 51.

2016 – TNA Impact Wrestling taped their unique ‘Total Non-Stop Deletion’ event at the Hardy Compound in Cameron, North Carolina.
