On This Day In Wrestling History… November 14th

On this day in wresting history we look back at a legendary WWE debut, a wrestling can of noodles, and an emotional tribute to a true superstar.

1992 – The final episode of WWF Saturday Night’s Main Event aired by FOX was broadcast on TV. Shawn Michaels beat the British Bulldog to win his first ever singles championship in the company. The main event of the night saw Papa Shango submit to Bret Hart’s Sharpshooter in a WWF Championship match.

1999 – WWF Survivor Series was held in the Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, Michigan and saw the PPV debut of Olympic Champion Kurt Angle. Elsewhere on the card The Big Show defeated the team of The Big Boss Man, Prince Albert, Mideon, and Viscera in quick succession in a traditional Survivor Series match. The Big Show was supposed to have team members with him but he’d attacked them all earlier in the night. He would then go on to the main event and win the WWF Championship in a triple threat match against Triple H and The Rock as a last minute replacement for ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. The Texas Rattlesnake had been written out of the match due to a long term injury, explained by Austin being run over by a car in the arena parking garage.

2002 – Kaiju Big Battel: Kaiju Rampage New York took place at The Roxy, New York. In the opening match Robox defeated (the wonderfully named) Kung-Fu Chicken Noodle. The main event saw Kaiju Grand Champion Silver Potato retain the belt against Uchu Chu The Space Bug in a ‘Rat Trap’ cage match, where the ring was covered in hundreds of rat traps.

2004 – Survivor Series was in Cleveland, Ohio. In the main event Team Orton (Randy Orton, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, and Maven) defeated Team Triple H (Triple H, Edge, Batista, and Snitsky) in a traditional Survivor Series match with Orton being the lone survivor. As a result of the win, each member of Team Orton was allowed to be the General Manager of RAW for a week each.

2005 – An emotional Monday Night Raw paid tribute to Eddie Guerrero who sadly died the previous night in a hotel room in Minneapolis. The show opened with a ten-bell salute and would feature Guerrero segments and memories in between matches. Story lines were put on hold for the night and instead featured straight wrestling matches between Raw and Smackdown superstars including the first ever singles match between John Cena and Randy Orton as well as the only singles match between Shawn Michaels and Rey Mysterio.

2017 – In her namesake town in North Carolina, Charlotte Flair defeated Natalya to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
