On This Day In Wrestling History…August 22nd

We look back at the significant events that took place on August 22nd in the annals of wrestling history.

1964 – WWWF Heavyweight Champion wrestled Waldo Von Erich to an 81 minute draw (due to curfew) in a legendary bout at Madison Square Garden.

1999 – A highly eventful WWE SummerSlam event took place. The main event saw Mankind defeat champion ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin and Triple H in a triple threat match officiated by Minnesota governor Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura.

Elsewhere on the card, The Undertaker & Big Show defeated Kane & X-Pac to win the WWF Tag Team Titles, Jeff Jarrett beat D-Lo Brown to add the European Title to the Intercontinental Title he already possessed, Al Snow beat The Big Boss Man to win the Hardcore Title and Ken Shamrock defeated Steve Blackman in a Lion’s Den Match.

2005 – WWE Champion John Cena defeated Chris Jericho in a ‘You’re Fired’ match. This would be Jericho’s last appearance in WWE until his return in November 2007.

2015 – At NXT Takeover: Brooklyn. Bayley won the NXT Women’s Championship from Sasha Banks in what is considered one of the greatest women’s matches of all time in front of NXT’s record audience to that point at the Barclay’s Center. After the match, their fellow ‘Four Horsewomen’ Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch, came out to join the duo in celebration of what they had accomplished for women’s wrestling.

In the night’s main event, Finn Balor successfully defended his NXT Championship against Samoa Joe in a ladder match.
