On This Day In Wrestling History…1st March

On 1st March in wrestling history, Bam Bam Bigelow engaged in a ring destroying war in Asbury Park for the ECW Television Championship.

1992 – The second SuperBrawl took place at the Mecca in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the main event, Sting defeated Lex Luger for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Earlier on the card, Flyin’ Brian Pillman defeated Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger to win the WCW Light-Heavyweight Championship.

1998 – ECW ‘Living Dangerously’ took place at the Asbury Park Convention Center in New Jersey. The highlight of the card saw hometown boy Bam Bam Bigelow defeat Taz to win the ECW Television Championship. It was during this match that the two crashed through the ring in a clip used repeatedly over the years in ECW highlights packages. Another iconic ECW scene took place after the main event of this show. Following Al Snow’s victory over Chris Candido, the crowd filled the ring with hundreds of styrofoam heads in tribute to Snow.

2005 – At a SmackDown taping in Albany, New York, Orlando Jordan defeated John Cena to win the WWE United States Championship.

2006 – Brent Albright defeated CM Punk in the final of a one-night tournament to declare a new OVW Champion. The title was vacated when previous champion Matt Cappotelli was sadly diagnosed with brain cancer.

2011 – Johnny Curtis was declared as the winner of the fourth series of WWE NXT (When the brand was a talent show format). Curtis would go on to find lasting fame in WWE as Fandango.

2015 – Ring Of Honor’s 13th Anniversary show took place at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main event saw ROH Champion Jay Briscoe retain his title in a Four Corners Survival match against Tommaso Ciampa, Hanson and Michael Elgin.

2020 – Evolve presented what turned out to be their last ever show, Evolve 146, before the company was declared closed by owner Gabe Sapolsky in July 2020. The show took place at the Melrose Memorial Hall in Melrose, Massachusetts and the main event saw A.R Fox defeat Josh Briggs.
