On This Day In Wrestling History…19th August

August 19th is a memorable day in the history of wrestling with several big title changes and events occurring on this date. Take a look at our rundown.

1975 – ‘The Golden Greek’ Jim Londos passed away as a result of a heart attack.

1990 – Riki Chosu defeats Big Van Vader in Tokyo for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

2001 – In the midst of the Invasion angle, WWE presented SummerSlam from the Compaq Center in San Jose, California. The card featured mainly WWE vs. The Alliance matches with several title changes occurring including The Rock defeating Booker T for the WCW Championship and Edge taking the WWE Intercontinental Title from Lance Storm.

2002 – After a series of title changes on the night between Bradshaw, Tommy Dreamer and Crash Holly, the 24/7 rule for the WWE Hardcore Title is discontinued. The title itself would be declared defunct one week later when Intercontinental Champion Rob Van Dam defeated Tommy Dreamer in a title unification match.

2012 – WWE presented SummerSlam at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. A fairly lackluster event was headlined by Brock Lesnar getting a win over Triple H by submission.

2017 – NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York and featured two title changes. Alexander Wolfe and Eric Young of sANITY defeated The Authors Of Pain for the NXT Tag Team titles and in the main event, Drew McIntyre won the NXT Championship against Drew McIntyre.

2018 – WWE SummerSlam took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. A number of title changes took place on the night. Most notably, Ronda Rousey won her first and only Raw Women’s Title from Alexa Bliss. In the main event, Roman Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.
